The questions we ask L 006

The questions we ask will determine the priorities and direction of our lives. How come? You ask.

Well we all carry a little internal dialogue in our heads. And the decisions you make will usually be in response to a series of questions. For example you ask:

  • How will I look in this situation if I reveal what I am really thinking?
  • What will others think if I suggest we change the programme?
  • Will anyone follow me if I take the initiative to give a lead?
  • What if I make a mistake?
  • What if I can’t fulfil my promise or other’s expectations?
  • What if they don’t get healed when I pray?
  • What if they reject me for sharing my faith?
  • What could go wrong?
  • What if I am misunderstood?
  • What if no one turns up?
  • What if I run out of money?

You see these all come from a negative expectation and lead to a cautious or even unbelieving decision.

But what if your questions are more like this:

  • What might God do if I step out in faith?
  • What could happen if I prayed for someone to be healed?
  • How could we change the situation together?
  • What is stopping us praying right now?
  • Why wouldn’t God honour my step of faith?
  • How could I grow in my leadership through this situation?
  • How can I make my best contribution?
  • Who might join us if we start this community / project?
  • How could I change the atmosphere of my office?
  • What legacy do I want to leave after I am gone

By asking different questions we will come to very different conclusions. We need to start to take control of the silent but potentially deadly conversations that kill our leadership, our self-esteem and initiative. We need to start to think of the creative, generative, possibility questions that will open new doors of opportunity to us and release our latent leadership.

  3. [...] A big part of influence (and therefore Leadership) is the ability to ask the right questions at the right time. But what about the right person? Often times, that right person is you – so are you asking yourself the right questions at the right time? I enjoyed Nic’s blog post on this because I spend a lot of time thinking about what to ask other people – just not so much time thinking about what to ask myself! this is sooo helpful and massively true. Our inner conversations can bring life or death, heal or destroy and we need to work hard at reframing our negative questions. These are really helpful suggestions – thanks again.
